Polypro’s, sacks and packs
Posted by Mick under: Equipment .
On what was more than likely the final store trip of the year, i popped into the Melbourne CBD Mountain Designs store and finished putting together the day/overnight walk or my mini-expedition kit as i like to think of it :)
First up, some Mountain Design Polypropylene thermals…pants (AUD $34.95)and a top (AUD $39.95), which are both made out of 100% Polypropylene . I have had a pair of the Premium Unisex Pants and the Long Sleeve Premium Contrast Crew tops before and was quite happy with them. I know that merino thermals are all the rage these days, but whenever i try a merino thermal i always feel all itchy which shouldn’t be the case with really fine grade wool but for some reason i do so its the trusty polypro for me…but not the ones with the stripes though ;)
Next up some Sea To Summit Seam Sealed Stuff Sacks. I picked up two medium 9 litre sacks (AUD $14.95 each) and one large 15 litre sack (AUD $15.95).
Specs from the Sea To Summit web site:
- Easy single action draw cord system
- Grab handle at base
- 10000mm waterproof fabric
- Double-stitched and tape seam sealed
- Reinforced stitching on all stress point
- White coating for bright interior
- Assorted colours
70D, 210T, 10,000mm, PU coated Nylon - it is the ultimate storm proof material for stuff sack use. Our Seam Sealed Stuff Sack, has a Hypalon® clip in loop and single hand operation draw cord closure. This stuff sack is ideal for keeping your items organised and protects them from light rain and soggy pack fabric.
Finally i needed a nice day/overnight pack to put all of this stuff into so after looking at a few different packs i selected a Mammut Flight 35 litre pack (AUD $239.95).
This is a neat swiss designed alpine quality pack with some great features:
- Single compartment pack intended for fast and light ascents
- Features robust body in Velocity nylon and Hypalon
- Single buckle fastening
- Butterfly™ back system
- Ultra stable ice tool mounting system
- Hydration compatible
- Flap pocket
CARRYING SYSTEM: butterfly [TM]
WEIGHT IN G: 1400
VOLUME IN LITRES: 35
LENGTH OF BACK: regular
UPPER FABRIC: Nylon 420 D Velocity
BASE FABRIC: Nylon 1680 D Ballistic
I’ve never owned any equipment made by Mammut before so i’ll be interested to see how this one goes as they do have a pretty good reputation from what i can find.
The pack is no doubt a bit over the top for a day/overnight pack with all of its alpine bits, but i’m pretty sure it will come in handy for a little trip/expedition i want to get out of the way in 2008 and will hopefull perform well on my summer expeditions.
